Yes, there is a day to celebrate this game changing water heater that saves $200-$500 dollars and one ton of CO2 annually. We love this technology so much that we’ve installed four of them in four different living spaces. Joe even promotes this humble technology as part of his day job. Today we share why we love heat pump water heaters and how you can plan to install one in your own home.
To help understand the energy savings and climate benefits of heat pump water heaters, we compared them to other important clean energy technologies. We found that they are the energy equivalent of seven solar panels but cost one sixth of the price! Similarly the electricity saved by a heat pump water heater could power an average household’s electric vehicle!
Our Experience
Since 2017 we’ve installed heat pump water heaters in our main house and accessory dwelling unit, in Portland, Oregon, and on both sides of a family-owned duplex in Cleveland, Ohio. Read about our experiences and recommendations for these decarbonization superheroes. As one of the first households in the country to buy and install a 120-volt plug-in heat pump water heater, we also offer a deep dive on this exciting technology.

There are some great incentives for heat pump water heaters — some new ones are now available in northern CA! I wish it were always simple to make the switch. Ours will require a pump for a drainage pan, and venting to the outside because our water tank is in a living area (a finished partial basement that serves as my husband's office). Hoping to make it happen!
