I installed one 80 gal. HPWH for 2 units but it sucks the heat out of the area and takes the temperature down to about 40. It's adjacent to a living space which made it cold in winter. I switched the HPWH to run conventionally. I think the HPWH is meant to be located in a garage or outdoors, maybe in Arizona, not indoors in Portland Oregon. My electrician said the 50 gallon electric water heater which I removed would have been adequate for 2 units. Has anyone had this experience?

I recently had to replace my gas water heater. The quotes I got for a HPWH (which contractors in Ohio refer to as a hybrid) were for $6,000+ for a 50 gallon unit, installed. I wouldn’t have minded paying somewhat extra, as it would save $ and the planet, but $4,000 extra was too much. Next time, I guess - if I live that long!
